Mahjong is an ancient Chinese game, played with ’tiles’ instead of cards. We do ‘pay’ each other according to the scores we achieve, but we use ‘tallies’ (plastic sticks) NOT money !

It’s a game you can play at several levels. At its most basic, you could learn to play it in one or two sessions, especially if you take home and study the (National) u3a’s guide to the rules.

Before long, you’ll be ready to try the more complicated levels and even beat those of us who have been playing for years.

When you’re actually playing, you can sometimes have a score higher than the person who calls Mahjong (who goes ‘out’ first). It’s that sort of game !

Mahjong will in future meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays in the afternoon, 2-4pm

Sadly, during the year  2020/21, we have lost several members of our group, and so now do have some vacancies. Please ask Rita for more information; see below.

MAHJONG GROUP REPORT, SUMMER 2021

After our long, unexpected, and unplanned break, the future is looking a little more hopeful!

If and when ‘normal service’ is resumed, Rita Todd will take over from me as Group Leader of Mahjong.

The meetings will still be on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month, but will all be in the afternoons, 2-4pm, and will all be at Rita’s house, as she has kindly agreed to take over hosting both sessions.

Unfortunately, we’ve lost some members over the last year or so, but that does mean there are now vacancies in the group, so new members would undoubtedly be welcomed. If you would like to join the group, contact Rita on contact@portsdownu3a.org.uk.

My thanks to everyone who supported my efforts to teach them Mahjong, and I do hope it has been an enjoyable experience!

Best wishes

Christine London

MAHJONG REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 2019

Through the summer, we have rearranged our meetings to be held in the evenings again, making use of the late sunsets. Thanks to Ann and Rita for continuing to host us so generously in their homes – we do appreciate this very much indeed. From 24th September, we will revert to afternoon meetings, as the nights begin to draw in (sigh!).

Owing to the domestic settings of our meetings, and the need for tables on which to play, we don’t have the space to take any more members. Apologies.
